A primary allergy is an allergy typically to pollen or food that triggers a direct allergic reaction, as opposed to a secondary allergy (or cross-reactivity), which is an allergy to a new and different allergen that emerges later due to similarities between the proteins of the allergen that the person is originally allergic to and the new allergen (e.g. a primary allergy to walnut causing a secondary allergy to pecan).
